I’ve been teased for sneaking my own popcorn into movie theaters, but I stand by my guns (and my huge purse) – homemade air popped popcorn is so much healthier (and cheaper!) than the stuff at the snack stand.
The good people at Nutrition Action Healthletter have published a story this month about the calorie, salt and fat content of movie theater popcorn – and the facts are astounding. Look at the popcorn and go invest $20 in a popcorn popper for your home. Be sure to buy organic corn kernels for your personal use, as non-organic corn most often contains GMOs.
My homemade recipe for popcorn:
1/4 cup kernels = about 3 quarts popcorn
1/3 to 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil + 2 tablespoons flax oil drizzled on top and tossed
1/4 to 1/3 cup Nutritional Yeast Flakes, sprinkled on top and tossed

WHEW! You’re recommending over 600 calories of pure fat! Suggest going beyond the “healthy fat” mythology and study the basics as explained by Esselstyn and other scholars. Wish there was something that provided a butter-like flavor for popcorn that had ZERO calories. Hope springs eternal in this vegan’s breast. Plain dry popcorn just does not do it. I do not use ANY butter – at least that I know of. The research AGAINST olive oil is overwhelming and stands unrefuted. OUCH.
Did I mention that I share this popcorn with other people? I’m not going to eat the whole thing by myself, and unheated extra virgin olive oil is certainly a safe choice, as shown by these sources:
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2000/01/30/olive-oil-colon-cancer.aspx
If Dr. Mercola, The Mayo Clinic and The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine can all agree I think some unheated olive oil is safe to consume.
In reference to something to put on popcorn for a “little flavor”. what about the fat free {I know its in scant sprays}, but the butter flavored FF cooking spray is not bad on bland “naked” popcorn….. Nowhere near the same fat as the others….!
Not sure about the hydrogenated part…….. I used such a small amount, its nothing like eating a “lard biscuit”…right?

Hiya Debbie~
Be sure to read my blog on those sprays:
It’s best to avoid any spray oils unless you get one of the refillable, pump cans that you fill yourself. Fat-Free usually = not real food.
Be well, Alex
