I’m home, I’m tan and I’m relaxed – last week’s vacation to Hawaii was wonderful. Lounging on the beach for hours, reading non-fiction books, trashy magazines and going for swims in the warm waters of the Pacific were truly healing for me on every level.
The only “blip” on my week was that I got my period within the first hour of getting off the plane! Has this ever happened to you? Well, it was truly frustrating (come on – I’m supposed to live in my bikini this week!) – but I was lucky enough to have my handy MOON CUP with me.
Not only is the MOON CUP a life-saver (and bikini saver) for the busy woman who travels, this product is necessary for any woman who cares about her body, the environment, and wants to save thousands of dollars over her reproductive life!
Not only are standard tampons and pads made with genetically engineered cotton, according to an incredible article on the Organic Consumers Association:
“… the risk to women’s health posed by highly toxic dioxin, a by-product of the chlorine bleaching process historically used to make tampon fibers white? According to the Village Voice, in 1992 a Congressional subcommittee uncovered an exchange of memos in which FDA scientists reported discovering trace levels of dioxin in some tampons. “Citing studies that indicated dioxin was unsafe at any level…subcommittee chair Ted Weiss accused the FDA of ignoring its own scientists’ warnings,” wrote the Voice.”

That was just unlucky to be getting your period right before your beach vacation. Thank goodness you had the Moon cup handy…Can’t wait to use any of the Glad Rags products. But I still have to wait due to a long nursing experience with my pre-schooler and the pending arrival of my surprise baby any minute. But from all the reading I have done, I am so ready for the alternative to chemicals in my body. I am so ready to have another period after a 3-year break…

I love using products that help the environment and are body-friendly as well!
Alternative Feminine Products have a bad rap for being hard to use or extremely noticeable [usually these comments are from people who have never tried them]. As a 7 year GladRag user I can say that this is not true. Whether using the Moon Cup, GladRags or a different reusable product, no one will ever know that you have your period. These reusable items are just as easy to tote around as disposable AND tend to have a lot less leakage. Factor in the thousands of dollars in savings & health benefits and the pros of reusable feminine products are immense.
I’ve been thinking of trying the moon cup for a while. I am glad to hear how much you like it.
Ahh…how I love reusable products! I am a complete convert to cloth pads and have always wanted to try a moon cup. Good thing you had yours with you!
I’ve been using Glad Rags products for 5 or 6 years now and they are such a great alternative to those nasty plastic pads and uncomfortable tampons! I highly recommend eco-friendly menstrual products because not only are they good for the earth, they are GREAT for your body as well!
Hurray for Gladrags and the Moon Cup!
I got my period today for the first time since having our 6 month old – I’m not used to this so quickly after having a baby. My Glad Rags were at home, so I used a cloth breast pad! Funny to come across your blog today!
I’ve used a Keeper Cup in the past and loved it!
Great idea for a contest!!
I confess I’ve never tried these products but now I’m really intrigued. I’m off to read more about it all.
I actually just purchased a moon cup today and an organic cotton pad kit. Can’t wait to try them.
I have heard of the moon cup before, have yet to try it. Would love to try a moon cup!
I would love to try this product! I didn’t really even know there was an alternative to the standards. Thanks for sharing.
I have never tried this before, but I am eager to learn more. What a wonderful way to help out the environment while being good to your body! Great Blog!
What’s the difference between the Moon Cup and the Diva Cup?
I have been thinking about trying one of these for a while. Tampons tend to make me feel a little nauseous, so it’d be great to try something else that’s conducive to an active lifestyle!
I am currently having an Aunt Flow moment right now. After reading your praise, I am going to do what someone suggested and purchase a moon cup with a cotton sanitary pad. Thanks for tip.
Thank You for talking about this! It’s one of those products I’ve read about but no one has ever discussed their experiences with it, and it just seems so foreign without real reccomendations.
I’ve been wanting to try something like this, I’m sick of shelling out $8 a month for Always pads.
I’ve been wanting to try the moon cup or similar product…thanks for posting about it.
I never heard of the moon cup. But knowing that it is environmentally safe and keeps our own bodies healthy as women, is definately something I would want to try.
Been wanting to try this for quite some time, but as I had an imperforate hymen until recently, I was unable to use it. I can’t wait to try it now!
I like the sounds of using natural products for my period. I didn’t even know they existed! I always feel bad about using and throwing away so much disposable products…I’m really happy to know about this site!
I have never tried a moon cup, but will have to check it out…how are they on comfort?
They’re pretty much the same thing! Both are silicone where the Keeper is latex rubber which some people are allergic to. All are comfortable! Alex
Please enter me!

These are very comfy (once you get a hang of them – took me a few tries, but hang in there!) and offer two sizes. Size A is for women under 30/who have never had a vaginal birth, Size B is for women over 30/who have had a vaginal birth. I’m on the larger size now, and it’s doing great! Alex
I don’t need to win the contest because I already have my own diva cup .. but I just wanted to comment and say that I LOVE my diva cup and wish I would have discovered it years earlier! I think I started trying to use mine in around 31 (two years ago) and I know if I ever have any daughters of my own I will be telling them all about it! It’s not messy at all (though it sounds like it would be) and totally comfortable.. sometimes you forget you even are wearing it! I think every woman should give these a try! Thanks for shining a spotlight on these types of products!
I know I need to make the switch to nontoxic feminine products, but I have been putting it off because of the cost. A moon cup would be nice!
I just think that it’s absolutely ridiculous that women and the feminine product industry are risking our health so that we have something as insignificant as white tampons. Who really cares what colour they are as long as they do what they’re supposed to do. A white tampon is not worth the risk of getting toxic shock syndrome. I have been using something called a Dixie cup for 2 years and I feel so much better using it. I have never heard of the Moon Cup but am definitely intrigued.
oh my god I meant to say that I have been using a diva cup for 2 years. wow. i don’t think a dixie cup would quite do the trick. ha ha
What a great product. I’d love to try it.
I’ve been curious about these cups for years, I just haven’t tried one yet. Even if I don’t win, I’m going to go out and buy one — I’ve heard nothing but great things!
I echo Marcellina….I also know I need & want to make the switch from toxic feminine products to something as revolutionary as the Moon cup. It sounds like an amazing & convenient product. Thank you for the heads up on it!
I love the idea of a product that is good for my body and the enviroment too- not to mention my pocketbook!
Thanks for the chance to win- love the blog
What an interesting product. I always hoped there would be an alternative to the pads and tampons. I hate having to stock up on those products.
I recently visited the Gibbon Experience in Laos. It’s this incredible eco-tourist spot in the Bokeo forrest where you zip-line through the jungle and sleep in tree houses up in the tree canopy. It was an AMAZING experience. I also met many awesome people. One girl I met from Australia is spending the year traveling around Asia. She said that she got a Moon Cup for her trip and that it is an absolute lifesaver. I was interested in one before that because of environmental reasons, but I also LOVE to travel and go on one major trip a year. I can’t wait to try this product.
That was pretty funny, though! Alex
I have been thinking about getting this for a long time. Maybe I should get it! I hate buying and using tampons…sounds like it’s worth the investment.
There is an awesome discussion about the mooncup on this thread:
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=196357&highlight=mooncup
It answers almost any question you could have about it! Certainly convinced me and my only regret is not discovering it sooner – and having to explain it to people who think it’s gross!
Very helpful information thank you! I like knowing what is toxic so I can stay away from it.
I know I need to make the switch to a Moon Cup, but have been skeptical because I live on Maui and in my bikini! Happy to know that the Moon Cup worked for you at the beach! Now I want one! Thanks for this blog, Alex!
I have tried and often use the diva cup which is very similar to the moon cup. I am glad the moon cup came to save the day for you in Hawaii.
I had not heard about this before! I am very intrigued by this product and have already shared this info with several coworkers!! Thank you!
I was just at a conference and spent some free time exploring a local co-op, where I discovered Moon Cups for the first time. I did not buy one but was intrigued enough to start my research, so this post is very timely! I am not sure where to purchase one locally (does Walgreen’s carry them?) as the closest co-op is 25 miles away.
I’ve heard about the mooncup before, but haven’t tried one before. I am very interested in using a product that is better for my body and the environment.
thanks for spreading the awareness of these environmentally friendly alternatives!
You can buy one from http://www.gladrags.com – they will send you one! Alex
I use the diva cup and at first it was a little awkward to use and get use to but now I love it! I wouldn’t use any other product. I feel good about what I am doing for the environment and for myself! It is no longer a hassle to have your period! You barely notice it at all! I agree with you Alex… it is the way to go!
Thanks for that nice summary of about the Moon Cup saved your life !!
My cups often do the same, whenever it’s a long day at work or a sport moment, each one of them is so great that I couldn’t get back to old tampons and disposable products !
Imagine, it’s like being raised drinking Champagne, and suddenly having to go back to bitter New Beaujolais (sorry for the French references !!
Enjoy and cherish your cup
I’m really interested in a more natural lifestyle- sans unnecessary chemicals… this would be fantastic to try!
Just read about this its sound great.
